"Green" Home Improvement

May 31, 2009 by Mark Maier

The latest trend in Home Improvement is "Green" improvements that can have an impact on the environment and on the pocketbook according to "Trend Toward Energy Efficiency Scores With Consumers"in Radio Sales Today....

"Fred Miller, managing director of the Home Improvement Research Institute (HIRI), addressed this topic during a session called "Energy Savings -- An Outstanding Consumer Opportunity" at the recent National Hardware Show in Las Vegas.

"We're trying to help people understand the opportunity to market products related to energy savings," Miller told Home Channel News. "Not only do people have a positive attitude toward energy savings, but they're actually doing it. This opens up wonderful business opportunities."

Miller essentially described two kinds of green consumerism -- the altruistic approach to combat global warming, for instance, and the cost-conscious approach to save money over time. One of the key findings from HIRI data is that consumers put more importance on the latter.

HIRI data showed that 74 percent of consumers said it was very important to reduce household energy costs or utility bills through energy-efficient improvements. That compares to only 49 percent who said it was very important to reduce household's contribution to global warming through energy-efficient improvements"

I was in the field this past week with a glass company that specialized in Windows and Doors and they mentioned that consumers are figuring out the Return On Investement for replacing items with energy efficient models that pay for themselves over time.  Bringing that return to light during their advertising campaign can turn into the kind of results your Home Improvement clients are looking for.
