From Idea to explosive website traffic

Aug 2, 2009 by Paul White

I have constantly told people that if you want a website with high traffic its all about quality unique content.  Such content will create high levels of word of mouth on the blog o sphere.

Understanding Blogs and their role with traffic.

Every blog is like a mini newspaper. It doesn't make the news, it just reports it.  Newspapers get a lot of their content from third party sources like Routers, or the Associated Press.  Very little of their information comes form real journalism.  Blogs are the same way, except instead of using paid third parties.  They use the content from other sites.  Most blogs run like this
1. search the web for interesting content.
2. create a blog entry on your site, discussing the content you found in your own words, if you can include a picture from the source.
3. Include link to source
4. Repeat

This has been the model of success for sites like Engadget.com which now serves content to millions of unique monthly visitors.

My own personal Experience with A good blog Entry.

Recently I upgraded to a Sony Xperia X1i, so I could better manage my servers and websites.  However after getting the phone I noticed the battery cover was made of Metal ( not typical of most phones ).  If its metal that means it has the potential to support some bling action.  So I broke out the sand paper, and my favorite polish creme, and went to work.  6 hoursr later, I had a beautiful mirrored finish on my battery cover.  I took pictures while I did it and posted it a little how to on my blog.

Now the next part is important.  I then went to 3 different websites.  One of them was Engadget.com. Another was a Xperia Users Blog, and another was an Xperia Users Forum.  I submitted a link to my blog, to each of the sites, to tell them about my little project.  Engadget never responded, but the blog and forum loved it.  They created their own blog entries to showcase my work.  This drove some traffic to my website.  But tech blogs are an interesting bunch. If one thinks its cool, they all do.  The next thing I knew my phone was displayed on the homepage of over a dozen blogs and websites, all providing a link to my post.

My Blog went from an average of 350 Unique Visitors / day. to 1150, and hasn't dropped below 600 Unique visitors since the spike.  If you search google for "Chrome xperia"  I am #1.  "Chrome sony phone" I am #4
This is the power of links.  You get some good content. Others pick up on it, and your made.
